NYPD officer accused of fatally choking Eric Garner could soon be much closer to learning his career fate

Bill de Blasio and Joe Biden faced questions about the 2014 incident.
The death of Eric Garner, an unarmed black man killed in 2014 after an encounter with police, hung over the Democratic debate on Wednesday, as New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and former Vice President Joe Biden’s roles in the aftermath were called into question.

In 2014, Garner died after being confronted by police in Staten Island for allegedly selling untaxed loose cigarettes.
One of the officers, Daniel Pantaleo, put him in a department-prohibited chokehold — in footage of the incident, Garner can be heard saying “I can’t breathe” multiple times.
The Department of Justice has decided not to file charges against Pantaleo,
who remains on paid desk duty at the NYPD and underwent a NYPD departmental trial earlier this year that could result in his termination.
In the meantime, de Blasio has declined to fire Pantaleo, saying that it’s up to the police commissioner to do so.

Daniel Pantaleo's career has been in jeopardy since he was caught on video in July 2014 putting the unarmed black father in an alleged chokehold.
Now, after a spring disciplinary trial, NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Trials Rosemarie Maldonado is expected to deliver,
perhaps by week's end, her recommendation on whether Pantaleo should be terminated to Police Commissioner James O'Neill and officials with the city agency charged with NYPD oversight.

All About NYC Mayor Promises Justice in Eric Garner Case

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio promised Wednesday that there will be justice in the case of Eric Garner,

who died from a fatal chokehold by New York City Police who were trying to arrest him for illegally selling cigarettes in 2014.

During Wednesday night’s CNN Democratic presidential debate, the mayor was asked why the officer accused of killing Garner is still on the streets.

When asked why Garner was still on the streets, the mayor said, “Let me tell you.

I know the Garner family. They've gone through extraordinary pain.

They are waiting for justice, and they're going to get justice. There's finally going to be justice.
